NJPW “Best of the Super Jr. XVII” 6/12/10 Matches

Best of the Super Jr. – Block A: Jushin Thunder Liger vs. La Sombra.  Sombra attacks Liger immediately and sends him outside, then hits a dive, all before Liger can get his cloak off.  Sombra hits Liger with a baseball slide dropkick to kick him out of the ring, then hits a diving moonsault to the floor.  Liger barely beats the count back into the ring.  Sombra covers him for 2.  Sombra covers again, but Liger gets a rope break.  Sombra gets a schoolboy for 2.  Liger hits a tilt a whirl backbreaker.  Liger hits a running shotei to the corner, then goes for a powerbomb, but Sombra counters it into a Frankensteiner for 2.  Sombra hits a tilt a whirl backbreaker and a diving spinning body attack for 2.  Liger goes outside and Sombra hits a springboard dive that looked kinda botched.  I think he slipped on the top rope.  Sombra makes it back into the ring, but Liger gets counted out in 4:32.  That was weak.  I hope Liger wasn’t hurt on the dive.  Sombra helps Liger up and raises his arm.  He’s a good sport!

Best of the Super Jr. – Block A: Kota Ibushi vs. Davey Richards.  JIP right after the bell.  They both throw some kicks.  They trade arm locks.  Ibushi turns it into a headscissors.  Richards turns it into a leg lock, then a head lock.  Ibushi lands a dropkick.  They trade chops and forearms, then Ibushi drops Richards with a kick.  They trade kicks on the apron.  Richards drops Ibushi on the apron with an arm ringer.  Richards works Ibushi over on the floor and rams his arm into the post.  Ibushi beats the count back in at 17.  Richards works his arm and hits a backdrop suplex for 2.  Richards keeps working the arm.  Ibushi botches a Frankensteiner.  Richards goes outside and Ibushi hits him with one of his gorgeous moonsaults to the floor.  They trade forearms in the ring, then boot each other in the face.  Ibushi ducks a kick and lands a flurry of strikes, then the standing Shooting Star press and the Lionsault for 2.  They fight on the top rope.  Richards goes for a sunset flip powerbomb and they counter each other a bunch, leading into a nice pinfall reversal sequence.  Richards lands on his feet from a German suplex attempt and hits a Tombstone.  “That’s it!” he yells, and jumps clear across the ring with a diving headbutt for 2.  How long until he learns that the headbutt is never “it?”  Richards goes for the Kimura, but Ibushi turns it into a cradle for 2.  Ibushi ducks a lariat Matrix-style and hits a German suplex for 2.  Richards locks in the Kimura again.  Ibushi manages to get a rope break.  Richards slams Ibushi and goes up top.  Ibushi cuts him off, but Richards knocks him down.  Ibushi hits a handspring Pele kick, then an avalanche-style Frankensteiner for  a very close 2.  Ibushi hits a 450 splash for the pin (11:20 shown).  Really good match.  I need to check out their EVOLVE match from earlier this year.

Best of the Super Jr. – Block A: AKIRA vs. Kenny Omega.  They shake hands and lock up.  They trade arm locks and AKIRA does flippy shit.  Mat wrestling, stalemate, applause.  Omega lands some strikes, then does a pelvic thrust and yells “BOOYAH!”  Omega hits a Frankensteiner.  AKIRA rolls outide.  Omega tries a dive, but AKIRA catches his leg and pulls him down, with Omega hitting his knee hard on the floor in the process.  AKIRA attacks the knee.  AKIRA does his backwards figure-four around the ring post again.  Omega barely beats the count back in the ring at 19.  They trade forearms.  Omega blocks a suplex attempt and tries one of his own, but his knee gives out.  He lands on his feet from another suplex attempt and drops AKIRA with a spin kick.  Omega fires back and hits a running elbow to the corner, then a missile dropkick for 2.  Omega goes for a Frankensteiner, but AKIRA counters into the STA.  Omega gets a rope break.  They trade forearms again.  They do some more stuff.  Omega hits the leg lariat bulldog thing for 2.  Omega goes for the Croyt’s Wrath, but AKIRA counters.  AKIRA hits a Shining enzuigiri and goes for the Musasabi press, but Omega avoids it.  Omegag gets a couple of 2 counts from cradles.  AKIRA hits another enzuigiri and plants Omega with a DDT and hits the Musasabi press for 2.  AKIRA locks in the STA again, but Omega reaches the ropes again.  AKIRA goes for the Muasabi press again, but Omega gets his knees up.  Omega hits the Hadouken and goes for the Croyt’s Wrath, but AKIRA counters and gets the Growing Up (weird STF cradle thing) for the pin in 11:27.  Good match.

Good stuff from this day, besides the abrupt ending to Liger/Sombra.
