NJPW “Best of the Super Jr. XVII” 6/10/10 Matches

Best of the Super Jr. – Block A: La Sombra vs. KUSHIDA.  They lock up.  Sombra backs KUSHIDA into the ropes and breaks.  KUSHIDA shoves Sombra.  Sombra does some flipping around and hits an arm drag.  Sombra flips to the apron and hits his rope balace arm drag thingy.  KUSHIDA goes outside and Sombra hits a diving moonsault to the floor.  Sombra throws KUSHIDA back in the ring and hits a basement dropkick for 2.  Sombra hits an elbow smash for 2.  They trade shots.  Sombra nails KUSHIDA with a knee strike and gets a jackknife hold for 2.  Sombra hits a Northern Lights suplex hold for 2.  Sombra locks in an Octopus hold.  I think that’s an Octopus hold, anyway.  KUSHIDA escapes via rope break.  Sombra continues beating on him.  Sombra dropkicks KUSHIDA out of the ring and goes for a dive.  KUSHIDA avoids it by getting back in the ring, then knocks Sombra off the aprn with a handstand kick and lands a plancha suicida.  Back inside, KUSHIDA hits a diving cross body for 2.  Sombra ducks a Buzzsaw kick and hits a springboard missile dropkick for 2.  Sombra does a Canadian backbreaker into a front drop for 2.  Sombra hits a fireman’s carry into a Michinoku Driver II and goes up top.  KUSHIDA cuts him off and tries an electric chair, but Sombra hits a sunset flip powerbomb.  Sombra goes for a moonsault press, but KUSHIDA avoids it.  They trade forearms on their knees.  Sombra gets a front cradle for 2.  KUSHIDA hits a Frankensteiner, but Sombra rolls through into a sunset flip for 2.  KUSHIDA reverses a la magistral for 2.  KUSHIDA plants Sombra with a whirlybird DDT and hits a moonsault press for the pin in 8:18.  Fun little match.  They tease it for a long time and finally shake hands and make friends.

Best of the Super Jr. – Block B: Ryusuke Taguchi vs. Nobuo Yoshihashi.  JIP right after the bell.  They lock up and do sweet mat wrestling.  Stalemate, applause.  Yoshihashi drops Taguchi with a flying forearm, then works his arm a bit.  Taguch hip tosses Yoshihashi a couple of times and hits a basement dropkick for 2.  Taguchi works Yoshihashi’s leg.  Taguchi hits a suplex for 2, then attacks the leg some more.  Yoshihashi fires back with chops, then gets his leg fucked up some more.  Repeat.  Yoshihashi lands a dropkick and hits his side suplex drop thing for 2.  Yoshihashi lands a missile dropkick.  Taguchi bails.  Yoshihashi hits him with a slingshot dive.  They both try German suplexes.  Yoshihashi hits his double arm suplex hold for 2, then locks in a cross armbreaker.  Taguchi cuts it back for 2, then locks in a half crab.  He turns it into an STF.  Yoshihashi manages to get a rope break.  Yoshihashi lands on his feet from a backdrop suplex, then Taguchi attacks the knee again.  Taguchi hits a front suplex for 2.  Yoshihashi turns a suplex attempt into an inside cradle for 2.  Another inside cradle for 2.  Schoolboy, but Taguchi rolls through and hits a dropkick for 2.  Taguchi goes for the Dodon, but Yoshihashi turns it into a front cradle for 2.  Yoshihashi lands a running knee for 2.  Yoshihashi hits a German suplex hold for 2.  Taguchi lands a dropkick and a Fisherman buster for the… 2!  I thought that was it.  Taguchi hits a Fisherman buster into a sit-out spinebuster (Bakapuryaha) for the pin (10:41 shown).  Good little match!

Best of the Super Jr. – Block A: Kota Ibushi vs. Gedo.  Gedo attacks Ibushi before the bell.  “Shut up, asshole!” he says to somebody.  Gedo heels it up as always, and it’s awesome as always.  “Come on motherfucker!”  “Shut the fuck up!”  Ibushi lands a springboard dropkick that sends Gedo outside.  Ibushi tries a dive and Gedo causes him to face plant him on the apron.  Gedo rams Ibushi’s face into the table.  “Shut the fuck up, ref!”  Gedo rams Ibushi’s face into the post.  Ibushi barely beats the count back into the ring.  Gedo beats up Ibushi and swears at the ref some more.  Ibushi slaps Gedo.  Gedo yells “Come on, Golden Boy!” and kicks his ass some more.  Gedo hits a DDT for 2.  “Shit!  Fuckin’ 2?”  You motherfucker!”  Gedo hits (I think) the Complete Shot for 2.  Gedo lands a superkick for 2.  Gedo goes up top, but Ibushi knocks him to the floor with a handspring Pele kick.  Ibushi hits  sweet Asai moonsault to the floor.  Ibushi hits a standing flippy splash for 2.  Ibushi counters the Complete Shot with a DDT, then hits a standing Shooting Star press and a Lionsault for 2.  Ibushi hits a German suplex hold for 2.  Ibushi tries a springboard, but Gedo avoids it and lands a superkick.  Gedo gets a schoolboy for 2.  Gedo ducks an enzuigiri and hits the Gedo Clutch for a close 2.  Ibushi schoolboys Gedo, then picks him up into a Regal-Plex like move for 2.  Ibushi lands a thrust kick, then slams Gedo and hits the Phoenix Splash for the pin in 10:01.  Good match, and Gedo is an awesome dick heel, as always.

  1. I saw the last match and it ROCKED. Gedo makes such an awesome heel. I’ve managed to catch several of his matches from this year’s tourney, and he’s done a great job in each. I really enjoyed his match with Devitt.

    Also, Ibushi is highly entertaining. I’ve only seen him a few times (like Hayato), but it’s made me want to see more. Recently caught Hayato vs Yoshitsune for the TJr title and it was just brilliant.

    I need to see the first match you reviewed here. The only match I’ve seen of La Sombra (vs Gedo) entertained…

  2. I’ve dug most of Sombra’s matches. His match with Richards was a real styles clash, though.
