NWA Bunkhouse Stampede 1988

Jim Ross and Bob Caudle are the announcers.  Tony Schiavone is the ring announcer.

NWA World Television Championship Match: Nikita Koloff (c) vs. NWA United States Tag Team Champion Bobby Eaton (w/ Jim Cornette).  Nothing at all happens for over a minute, besides Eaton and Cornette hugging.  They finally lock up, then Eaton goes to consult with Cornette.  They lock up again.  Eaton gets Nikita in the corner and gives a clean break.  Nikita does a hammer lock, but Eaton gets the ropes.  Eaton throws some punches.  Nikita kicks his ass.  Nikita wins a test of strength.  Eaton complains about hair pulling.  They do some amateur style wrestling, then Eaton elbows Nikita in the face.  Eaton kicks Nikita out of the ring.  They brawl outside.  Back inside, Eaton grounds Nikita with a side headlock.  Through out the match, we get the joy of listening to Cornette yell obnoxiously at ringside.  They get to their feet and Nikita slams Eaton.  Eaton consults with Cornette, who then yells at the referee.  Eaton goes back to the side headlock.  Nikita rolls it into a pinning predicament for 1.  Eaton sends Nikita out of the ring again.  They brawl outside some more. Nikita sends Eaton into the post, then hip tosses him on the floor.  Eaton rakes Nikita’s face.  Back inside, Eaton covers for a 2 count.  A little later, Eaton hits a missile dropkick for 2.  They do some mat work for a while.  Nikita nails Eaton with the Russian Sickle, knocking Eaton into the ropes.  Eaton gets Nikita in an ARMBAR!  Eaton keeps working the arm.  Nikita starts fighting back.  Nikita hits the Russian Sickle just as the 20:00 time limit expires at 20:01.  Nikita gets hold of Cornette’s tennis racket, but Eaton grabs it from him.  Stan Lane runs down and helps Eaton beat down Nikita.  The match was fine.

Ross and Caudle talk.

NWA Western States Heritage Championship Match: Barry Windham (c) vs. Larry Zbyszko (w/ Baby Doll).  Baby Doll gets in Windham’s face.  Nothing else happens for the first couple of minutes.  They finally lock up.  Windham hits an arm drag.  Baby Doll yells advice.  They do some more stuff.  Windham hip tosses Zbyszko again.  Zbyszko bails.  Back inside, Zbyszko takes Windham down and punishes his leg.  Windham escapes and Zbyszko complains about hair pulling.  Zbyszko applies a hammer lock.  Windham fireman carries his way out of it.  Windham hits an inverted atomic drop and Zbyszko bails again.  Zbyszko applies a convoluted leg lock to Windham’s injured knee.  Windham reveres it into a Kobashi-style rolling cradle, but Zbyszko turns it back over.  Windham escapes.  They shove each other.  Zbyszko gets Windham in another leg hold.  Windham escapes again, but he’s hobbling.  Windham hits a powerslam for 2.  Windham slams Larry, then goes a diving elbow drop, but Larry avoids it.  Zbyszko goes back to working the knee.  Windham turns a side headlock into a backdrop suplex.  Larry goes back to his original strategy of working the knee.  Windham rallies and drops Larry with a dropkick, then hits a suplex for 2.  Windham hits a gutwrench suplex for 2.  Windham clamps on a sleeper hold.  They fight outside.  Zbyszko gets beat up, then manages to send Windham into the post.  Windham pulls Larry’s balls into the ring post.  Zbyszko ducks Windham, who spills out of the ring.  Back inside, Zbyszko punches Windham to block a sunset flip attempt and covers for 2.  Larry goes for a neckbreaker, but Windham turns it into a backslide for 2.  Larry goes for a piledriver, but Windham backdrops him.  Zbyszko covers for 2 off of taking a move.  Odd.  They collide and both go down.  Windham avoids a knee in the corner and hammers Zbyszko.  Windham whips Larry into the referee, then covers for a phantom 3 count.  Zbyszko hits Windham with Baby Doll’s high heel shoe and covers for the pin in 19:17.  Larry wins the title!  It was pretty good, I guess.

Ross and Caudle talk.

NWA World Heavyweight Championship Match: Ric Flair (c) (w/ JJ Dillon) vs. Road Warrior Hawk (w/ Paul Ellering).  Hawk over powers Flair to start.  Flair nails Hawk, who doesn’t flinch.  They lock up again.  Flair tries to shoulder block Hawk, fails, and gets press slammed.  Flair bails.  Dillon calls for a time out.  Heh.  Hawk press slams Flair again.  Hawk stomps a mud hole into Flair in the corner.  Hawk continues to dominate.  Flair chops Hawk, realizes it isn’t working, and begs off.  Hawk drops him with a big shoulder block.  Flair bails and Hawk follows him outside to kick his ass.  Flair back pedals.  Hawk throws the wooden steps at him.  Back inside, Hawk puts Flair in a nerve hold.  Flair hits him in the balls.  Flair finally manages to get going.  Flair hits a knee drop for 2, when Hawk throws him off.  Flair throws Hawk out of the ring.  Flair sends Hawk into the barricade repeatedly.  Flair hits another knee drop for 2 back in the ring.  Hawk misses a knee drop and injures his knee.  Flair attacks the leg.  Ellering and Dillon bicker at ringside.  Hawk and Flair trade chops.  Flair hits a backdrop suplex, then wraps Hawk’s knee around the post.  Flair locks Hawk in the figure-four leglock, using the ropes to cause more pain.  How exactly does grabbing the ropes cause the guy more pain?  Hawk turns the figure-four over.  Flair gets a rope break while he screams in pain.  Man, Flair is out of this world awesome.  Flair goes up top and gets thrown off.  Hawk chops Flair.  Hawk comes out of the corner and clotheslines Flair and the referee.  Flair is fine, but the referee is killed dead.  Hawk clotheslines Flair over the top rope.  Flair pulls Hawk out of the ring.  Hawk rams Flair’s head into the post.  Flair is BUSTED WIDE OPEN!  Back in the ring, Hawk hits a powerslam on Flair.  Hawk does some kind of pose and Flair begs off.  Hawk hammers Flair.  Hawk drops Flair with a clothesline.  Flair scrapes Hawk’s eyes and goes up top.  Hawk superplexes him and covers.  Dillion comes in and hits Hawk with a chair.  Hawk no sells it.  Dillon begs off.  Hawk grabs him.  Flair hits Hawk with the chair.  The referee comes back in and counts 2, but Hawk throws Flair on top of the referee.  Flair suplexes Hawk.  Hawk no sells it.  Flair begs off.  Hawk hammers Flair in the corner.  Flair flops face first to the mat.  Hawk hits a fist drop.  Flair hits Hawk with the chair to cause the DQ in 21:41.  Hawk sends Flair into the corner.  Flair bails.  Really good match here, I thought.  They show highlights.

Ross and Caudle talk as the crew puts up the cage for the main event.  They play credits.  The Bunkhouse Stampede match is a Steel Cage Battle Royal, more or less.  They show footage of the Zbyszko/Windham match from earlier.

Bunkhouse Stampede – Final: NWA United States Heavyweight Champion Dusty Rhodes vs. NWA World Tag Team Champion Tully Blanchard (w/ JJ Dillon) vs. Ivan Koloff (w/ Paul Jones) vs. The Warlord vs. NWA World Tag Team Champion Arn Anderson vs. Lex Luger vs. The Barbarian vs. Road Warrior Animal (w/ Paul Ellering).  Everybody brawls.  Anderson chokes Koloff, then saves Blanchard from being eliminated by Rhodes.  Luger hammers the Barbarian.  Rhodes rakes Koloff’s face into the cage.  Arn and Tully double team Luger.  Luger fights back and prevents himself from being eliminated.  Rhodes and Koloff fight on the top rope.  Barbarian attacks Dusty.  Koloff is bleeding.  Dusty sends him into the cage.  Animal and Blanchard fight on the top rope.  Dusty tries to eliminate Anderson, but Koloff chokes Dusty from behind with a rope.  More brawling.  Dusty launches Tully into the cage.  Luger hits an atomic drop on Koloff and Koloff attacks the cage with his face again.  Dusty grinds Anderson’s head into the cage.  Anderson is bleeding too.  The Powers of Pain hammer Animal.  Barbarian bites Animal’s bloody forehead.  Luger randomly runs wild.  Rhodes whips all of the heels with Tully’s belt.  10 minutes in and no eliminations have occurred.  Rhodes whips Koloff with the belt some more and otherwise abuses him.  The Powers of Pain hammer on Animal some more.  Luger hits Tully with Arn Anderson’s boot.  The Powers of Pain beat on Luger.  Animal tries to power Arn over the top of the cage.  Barbarian tries to stop him, but gets dropped.  Tully tries to pull Koloff throw the cage door with a belt.  Anderson escapes his predicament, as does Koloff.  Animal sends Koloff over the top of the cage and punches him down for our first elimination.  Animal press slams Tully onto Arn.  Animal eliminates the Warlord, but The Barbarian hits Animal drop behind to send him out too.  Luger and Rhodes beat up the Horsemen.  Luger puts Blanchard in the Torture Rack.  The Horsemen try to eliminate Luger, but he fights them off.  Barbarian hammers Dusty.  Arn, Luger, and Tully all eliminate each other in one mess of an elimination.  Jones hands Barbarian an object to hit Dusty with.  Barbarian hits a diving headbutt.  Barbarian tries to eliminate Dusty.  Dusty fires some Bionic elbows at him.  They fight on the top rope again.  Barbarian tries to send Dusty over the top of the cage.  Rhodes responds in kind.  Rhodes gets Barbarian on the top of the cage and lands a couple of Bionic elbows to send Barbarian to the floor in 26:19.  This was… well, interesting.  Rhodes wins a big cowboy boot shaped trophy and $500,000.

Ross and Caudle talk.  Now suddenly, the audio and video are horrible out of sync.

Highlight video closes the show.

While the main event was pretty stupid, the other 3 matches were pretty solid, even if they weren’t mind blowing by any means.
